How it all started

We’ve come a long way and we are here to stay

2015 is a very important year to all of us at IGHub, it was the year we took action to change the narrative about the greatest yearning in our hearts – to build a vibrant tech ecosystem in our region.
We love stories and can tell you more about what it feels like starting up IGHub in 2015. This story is best told when you visit our hub and see things for yourself and of course, enjoy our hospitality.
2015 for us and the rest of our region was the beginning of greater things to happen, we hosted and organized Startup Weekend Abia at Aba, the first of its type in the region.

Our hopes proved us right
With several talented people doing amazing stuffs in tech, there is need to grow our ecosystem to become world class. But there’s a problem. There’s no platform for these youths to come together and collaborate, share resources and maximise individual potentials.
We took our movement further to the calm, quiet but vibrant city of Umuahia to paint our goodwill message that the light has come for people who are working on various innovation projects to have a platform that will help them succeed.
That message ended up as Startup Weekend Abia 2016 – the only Startup Weekend event held in Nigeria that year.

With combined efforts of other players in our ecosystem, we had a bright outing in 2017 with our city organizing major events in our region.
Just in 2017 alone, in alliance with the other ecosystem drivers, we hosted the Techpoint Media Tour, Google Developers Festival (DevFest 18), Startup South3 (Made In Aba Edition) and of course, organized Startup Weekend Abia 2017 for the third time.
These events will ushered in a new beginning into the development of our local ecosystem with promising returns as more people joined our movement.

There’s no better way to celebrate our journey so far without including women. Ever since we started, we’ve seen lot of women changemakers doing amazing stuffs for the society and changing the narrative of what they used to be known for.
This commitment led to our organizing Startup Weekend Women Abia 2018. The success recorded positioned us to represent Nigeria at the regional level of the global event and we would later win to represent Africa at Paris.
Our journey so far has the contribution of women and for 2018, there’s still more to come.

We started the year with our 2nd Developers and Netpreneurs Fellowship where we took almost 100 out of school youth to train them in software development and netpreneurship for free.

With our partnership with Facebook, we were able to train over 3000 businesses on how to use Facebook and its products to boost their business.

We continued our 12 weeks incubation program for startups that won during the Made In Aba Hackathon event and held a demo day where they pitched their businesses to investors.

We also launched one of our startups Igmart. An easy to use web based software that allows anyone to create an e-commerce store within 10 minutes.

Not just these, we also hosted Forloop Aba, Startup Weekend Sustainable Revolution, launched WordPress Aba Community and Elementor Aba Community.
And then we expanded our operations from our base in Aba to Onitsha.
